Battle of Brothers Audiobook Summary
A New York Times bestseller.
From bestselling author and historical consultant to the award-winning Netflix series The Crown, an unparalleled insider account of tumult, secrecy and schism in the Royal family.
The world has watched Prince William and Prince Harry since they were born. Raised by Princess Diana to be the closest of brothers, how have the boy princes grown into very different, now distanced men?
From royal insider, biographer and historian Robert Lacey, this book reveals the untold details of William and Harry’s closeness and estrangement, asking what happens when two sons are raised for vastly different futures – one burdened with the responsibility of one day becoming king, the other with the knowledge that he will always remain spare. How have William and Harry both agreed and diverged in their views of what a modern royal owes to their country? Were the seeds of damage sowed by Prince Charles and Princess Diana as their marriage unraveled for all the world to see? In the previous generation, how have Prince Charles and Prince Andrew’s own relations strained under the Crown? What role has Queen Elizabeth II played in marshalling her feuding heirs? What parts have Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle played in helping their husbands to choose their differing paths? And what is the real, unvarnished story behind Harry and Meghan’s dramatic departure?
In the most intimate vision yet of life behind closed doors, with its highs, lows and discretions all laid out, this is a journey into royal life as never offered before.

4.5 StarsBritish author Robert Lacey was a familiar name to me as I own a lot of hardcover books from back in the 80s and 90s about The Windsors- in particular Princess Diana. I just perused my bookcase and found a beautiful cocktail book about Princess Diana from this author dated 1982. Boy, has so much happened in this family since then!Although this book ends around the summer of 2020 and focuses on the "Mexit" of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Harry and Meghan), it still felt very current. There is a more updated kindle version of this book which I don't own. I've read a couple of other fairly recent books covering the fractured relationship between Princes William and Harry in the wake of Harry's marriage to Meghan Markle, but this one had the best information on the exodus of the Sussexes. Like most of these kinds of royal biographies, it starts in the present and then backtracks, providing a synopsis of the royal players like Princess Diana and Princes Charles' failed marriage and their affairs, the current marriage of Camilla and Charles, Princess Catherine's parentage and her college romance with Prince William. It also covered Meghan Markle's upbringing and her whirlwind romance with Prince Harry ending in marriage. The cover of the book is visually arresting, showing the final royal engagement Harry and Meghan were involved with. You can clearly see the seething anger on Harry's face and the strained facades of William and Kate as well. This book triumphs in explaining in great detail the events leading to Meghan and Harry's split from Great Britain and the royal family. It came down to the people involved with negotiating their exit, Prince Williams's apathy in getting more involved with that, and The Crown's reaction to the Sussexes making moves like launching their "Sussex Royal" website before informing The Queen about it first. When Meghan and Harry first broached the idea of being part time royals, they kept being postponed about a date to meet with the Queen to discuss it. In their frustration this led to the Sussexes making impetuous moves on their own which prompted the upper echelon of royals to finally meet with them. It seems that it all could have been handled better on both sides.

Battle of Brothers: William and Henry: The Inside Story of A Family in Tumult is written by Robert Lacey. This book tells the story of William and Harry Wales who have gone from two inseparable young boys to two very different and separate young men. While William was brought up knowing that one day he would be King with all those responsibilities, Harry was brought up with the idea that he was the spare and could do whatever he wanted. From the way Robert writes the book, the idea comes across that Harry feels inferior and that he is always second and not as good as William. Even his red hair sets him apart from the rest of the royal family. That the boys lost their Mother in such a horrific manner when they were so young made a difference in them. There was no one to step in and be their Mother figure. This seems to have affected Harry more than William. Although William has been able to let his anger at his Father’s role in his Mother’s unhappiness and death come out in various tirades with his Father, Harry seems to hold it in. The differences between Kate and Megan is definitely shown in this book. Kate knew what she wanted from the beginning and set herself up to fit into the role she chose. She was prepared for her role and has adapted it and herself to fit her version of being the wife William needs. Her first concern is her husband and her children. Megan, on the other hand, has had to fight for whatever she got. She had definite family support; but she had to work to get where she was. She is more confrontive than Kate and hasn’t realized that you might not have to be confrontive to get what you want. If she had not pushed Harry to be more confrontive, things may not have gone as far awry between William and Harry. The way Robert Lacey wrote this book, it seems he is wanting you to read between the lines and see the true character of all those involved. He wants you to see that there could have been a better way to handle everything so the animosity is not there. It didn’t seem to me that he believes the split between the boys will be healed nor that the split between Harry and Megan and the royal family will ever be breeched. If one has read all the tabloids and stories of the Royals over the years, nothing he brings out is a surprise. It is just the way he presents it that some details seem to take on more power than others.

I really enjoyed this book and the detailed back story of the two brothers going back to their parents childhood, marriage and divorce. This book also provided background on Kate and Meghan childhood and parents relationship. I loved how the author brought historical facts to shape this book. Very good.

Yes there are many a book about the Royal Family. I guess I wanted a bit of an updated version about the 2 hottest topic Males, Wills and Harry. The book starts during the Charles - Camila - Diane period giving you a background to what was to be the boys childhood. Lots of information from other sources so nothing really new. But the second half of the book was quite interesting from a perspective of 2 young men trying to make their way in the world - albeit a future King and a spare heir! A light read.

Good book, interesting writing style. I believe Harry will rue the day he did the Mexit. He seems to be pussy whipped. Ad Meagan seems to be a self important actress.

Balanced Summary of All Things WindsorRobert Lacey gives an energetic account of the public relationship between the brothers; beginning with the marriage of Charles and Diana, their lives and divorce, her death, and the subsequent public lives of the boys until now. He even gives a good bit of background on the families of the princesses. I read this after reading Omid Scobie's new book Finding Freedom. Where his book was also informative and clean reporting like this (as opposed to the yellow journalism of the tabloids,) this book goes above and beyond, giving more detail, and being more open with the facts. Lacey looks honestly at all sides of the issues. The book is fast moving and keeps your interest throughout. If you're only reading one of these books, I would suggest that this one is the better of the two for both of the reasons mentioned. It is a thorough account and it is intriguing reading. I enjoyed the Audible format narrated by Tim Frances.

A fast, fun read that does a good job bringing the reader up to speed on the William/Harry history that informs their present-day conflict. Lacey writes with humor, and is straightforward about what is known with some certainty and what can never be known. Anyone who enjoys The Crown and is interested in the royalty, but maybe doesn’t obsessively follow their day-to-day news, will have a good time with this book. Also, to Lacey’s credit, he presents a reasonably fair perspective on the Fab Four. No one is a perfect saint, no one is an irredeemable villain. Lacey creates portraits of the royals that are flawed and all too human. My only regret is that I read the first edition, which is months behind the times – with events unfolding as rapidly as they are, I would love Lacey’s perspective on the new developments. I suppose I’ll just have to hunt down the paperback!

Yes it’s total gossip and the “inside story” but this book is really well informed and I tend to believe the information. The Oprah Winfrey interview airs tomorrow but apparently it was anticipated last January before the pandemic and brought about the breakup last year. This book only mentions a breakup of the brothers at the end of the book. They didn’t talk to each other for a few months but their father’s COVID-19 diagnosis got them in touch with each other again. The book covers the brothers and goes back to Charles and Diana’s courtship and marriage and moves forward for the most part but isn’t completely linear. It’s very well organized and constructed and the writing is clear. I enjoyed it and helped me understand the brothers’ power dynamic better.

Fair and well writtenI was quite disappointed after reading the Scoble book ; so my expectations were not high for this book. I was pleasantly surprised that the author took great pains to address the roles, responsibility, and risks involved for the Royal Family. There's no salacious gossip. It is a well thought perspective.
