Ugly Love Audiobook Summary

From Colleen Hoover, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Starts with Us and It Ends with Us, a heart-wrenching love story that proves attraction at first sight can be messy.

When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn’t think it’s love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Never ask about the past.
Don’t expect a future.

They think they can handle it, but realize almost immediately they can’t handle it at all.

Hearts get infiltrated.
Promises get broken.
Rules get shattered.
Love gets ugly.

5+ Flying in Love stars!
Colleen Hoover has done it again. Not that I ever doubted her, but I didn’t know what to expect when starting Ugly Love. It’s safe to say she never disappoints. With her amazing writing style, fascinating characters and original story lines, I was hooked from the beginning. I expected to love this book. What I wasn’t expecting was for my heart to be shredded. Ugly.
Love.
Destroyed. Me.
This book pulled at my heartstrings. I felt so much heartache while reading. There were some lighter moments, but the majority felt heavy and emotional. When Tate decides to move in with her brother for a while, she never expects to meet a man like Miles. Miles is a pilot like her brother. Miles is taciturn. He seems flat. But there is something about him that intrigues Tate. I have no idea what’s going through his head. He never smiles. He never laughs. He doesn’t flirt. His face appears as if he keeps a constant veil of armor between his expressions and the rest of the world.
Miles and Tate develop a friendship, kind of. It’s difficult to be friends with someone who is closed off like Miles is. You can just feel the sadness radiating off of him. Then it happens. Tate feels like she is starting to make progress with this man. Miles really likes Tate. But the last thing he is looking for is love. Their attraction and chemistry is too strong to deny, so they go with the whole ‘friends with benefits’ thing. As long as Tate can follow Mile’s two rules, they can be together in that way. “Don’t ask about my past,” he says firmly.  “And never expect a future.”
Tate is so enamored with Miles, she’ll take him any way she can get him. She’s never felt this strongly about a man. She feels so much when she’s with him, she can’t get enough. Miles is the way he is for a good reason. The book is in dual pov, going back and forth between Tate’s perspective in the present, and Miles perspective in the past. You get to see as time goes on, why Miles has these rules and why he is protecting his heart this way. When you get hurt in such an ugly way, you want nothing to do with love. No matter how beautiful it can be. But that doesn’t stop Tate from developing feelings for him. Even though she knows they can never be reciprocated. Miles is a character that broke my heart. At first you see his past and the type of guy he was… then you see him so standoffish in the present. It makes you wonder what could have happened to make him that way. I had my theories (all of which were wrong) but once I found out- I wish I would have been right. It was something unimaginable and you can see why he wouldn’t be able to move on from that. I loved the chemistry and the slow build between them. Even though the feelings were fought most of the book, you could still feel them brewing just below the surface. I think every book I’ve read by this author has made me cry. Even if it’s just a few tears, I always cry. This book. I did more than just cry a few tears. Oh the tears. There were times I couldn’t control the tears. They just streamed down my face continually while I read through them. It was heart wrenching and so emotional. Ugly Love made me Ugly Cry. Big time. Some parts were worse than others, but wow. I just FELT so much while reading this. I am a huge Colleen Hoover fan and I’ve read every one of her books. This one has a little something different than the others. Most of her books make me feel strongly and contain a lot of emotional moments, and Ugly Love had that for sure... but it also had much more steam than the others. And yes- CoHo can write some sexy scenes! It’s been a while since I’ve read a paperback book, but when I heard this was out early at several bookstores, I ran to my local store and picked up a copy along with a mini light so I could read in bed. And I did. I stayed up way past my bedtime reading this book. I went into work the next day sleepy and raw from crying, but let me tell you- it was worth it! Although Hopeless still takes the top spot of my favorite book by this author, this will be a close second! Colleen Hoover is one of those people who is doing what she was born to do- she's sharing her amazing stories with us. Her writing style is unique and incredible. Ugly Love is captivating, beautiful, emotional, and devastatingly painful to read but I’ll let you in on a little secret. The ending makes every ounce of pain I felt worth it. An unforgettable story I highly recommend! It’s the beautiful moments like this that make up for the ugly love.

im a simple woman - give me a colleen hoover book and i will read it, no questions asked. its as easy as that!my love for CoHo aside, let me begin by saying i can understand why this book has received a lot of mixed reviews and negative feelings. i really do. because this is probably my least favourite book of hers that i have read thus far. i know my rating suggests otherwise, but there is just something missing from this story that i normally expect from her books. however, i dont think this is terrible. quite the opposite. i actually still really liked this, it just doesnt feel like its in the same league as her other novels. and i think that has to do with the relationship portrayed and maybe parts of the writing where a different writing style is used. but mainly i think it has to do with the relationship. i wouldnt go as far as calling it toxic, but it definitely isnt healthy. (view spoiler)[granted, miles was always upfront with what he wanted out of the arrangement, but i think tate was wrong to always lie about her feelings. im all for casual flings between two consenting adults, but it gets sooo muddy once one person starts to hide how they really feel about everything and sticking around with the hope that things will one day change (talking from personal experience here). (hide spoiler)] it gets ugly - just like the title of this implies. true, there is a lot of backstory and reasoning behind why everything plays out the way it does, but it is what it is.i do appreciate what CoHo does here though, by showing the downright ugly and painful parts of love. i think there is a really great message to be had when you realise that the bad parts of a relationship help you to appreciate the good, making you realise everything is worth it. its definitely a side of romance novels that i havent read about before and i quite enjoyed the new perspective. the characters are decent, the writing and pacing are solid, and i walked away from this feeling beyond satisfied. so another CoHo book down and many more to go!↠ 4.5 stars

I finished this book in 12 hours. ONE DAY. I finished it in one day. I'm giving it 5 stars because I still can't believe that I, Natasha Polis, finished a book in a day. I've never done that before. Ever. It was so good and so entertaining. Lots of sexytimes, very mature scenes, which I did enjoy but still not heavily detailed which I'm very thankful for. The emotions and tears I felt for and had for Miles really made this book. I can't wait to read another Colleen Hoover book!

I feel a little conflicted with my rating for this one. If I was basing it on emotions I’d give it 5 stars. If I was basing it on romance, I’d probably give it 2 stars. Ugly Love follows Tate, a young nurse who recently moved in with her brother, and Miles her brothers pilot friend. When their lives are thrown together, they cannot deny their attraction for each other. But Miles is closed off and insists he doesn’t want love. Can Tate accept what he is willing to give? I can finally say that I absolutely understand why people rave about Colleen Hoover so much. She knows just how to craft a beautiful and moving story that tackles so many difficult topics, but it still easy to read. I found myself on the verge of tears whilst reading some of the final chapters in this book. I know that the topics in this book will be difficult for many to read. But she manages to handle it so sensitively and in such a beautiful way. My issue with this book was the romance. It was very realistic in some ways. I’ve been in Tate’s position before…when I was younger and convinced that the man would change his mind. I just wanted to shake her and tell her not to accept less than she deserves. I found it so hard to root for Tate and Miles as a couple, although I did want the best for them separately. However, I appreciate how Hoover is able to create such flawed and realistic characters. They truly feel like people you would meet in real life. I just wanted Miles to be less cold, and Tate to be less naïve. Regardless, there is still a very important story within these pages of lessening pain and grief with time. This was the story I loved.I recommend this for fans of contemporary chick lit. But please be aware that the ‘romance’ aspect won’t suit everyone.

I don't think that I can say anything that hasn't been said before about Ugly Love, nor that my tangled thoughts will do justice to a book that was more than a book, but I know one thing for certain. It left me an ugly mess. And it proved that love is beautiful. “God gives us the ugliness so we don’t take the beautiful things in life for granted.” I ate a bucket of ice cream and cried my eyes out to get over the sorrow that tried to consume me,but it wasn't enough. The only way to make sure that my heart is still in place is the pain that pierces it with every breath I take.I cursed Colleen Hoover for bringing me to a sobbing state, for writing so vividly and masterly that my heartbreak is a being of its own,for making me care more for fictional people than the ones I know in real life, and thanked her at the same time. For making me feel alive, even though it was killing me. “Love isn’t always pretty, Tate. Sometimes you spend all your time hoping it’ll eventually be something different. Something better. Then, before you know it, you’re back to square one, and you lost your heart somewhere along the way.” The love between Tate and Miles was ugly.Dark.Twisted.Strained.A constant war.A losing battle.Tate tried so hard to make him see that they had something worth fighting for,but Miles was adamant that he was incapable of love. “If I were capable of loving someone...it would be you.” The worst thing was that he didn't even try.He shut her down, broke her, gave her a glimpse of what lay beneath his usually emotionless eyes and then took it back.He made her regret time and time again her decision to keep things between them strictly physical. He took only what he wanted from her,her body, and he refused what she willingly gave him.Her soul. Her heart.Because his was hidden under layers of ice, guilt and grief. His lust for her was unadultered, and Tate tried to accept that, that sex was the only thing she would get from him.Because the idea of not having Miles in her life was even more excruciating. “I’m terrified to lose him for good, so I sell myself short and take what I can from him, even though I know I deserve better.” Miles was a contradiction.I wanted to yell at him,to punch him and make him see that he can find beauty,he can find a person to rely on without regrets. But as much as I wanted to hate him,I couldn't.Instead,I suffered with him.I think the moment I fell in love with him was when he helped that homeless person, and although his attempts to push Tate away killed me slowly,my heart ached for him.Tate was losing her heart piece by piece as long as she let him make the rules, she loved him enough to let him use her to numb his pain, and she hoped. She hoped that he would love her back.Even though he was breaking her in the process. “His lips against mine feel like everything. Like living and dying and being reborn, all at the same time.” The pain and the heartbreak Ugly Love put me through? It was worth it.

alright. so, that was probably one of the saddest books i’ve ever read. i’m not kidding. it’s really intense and painful. it’s also so beautiful and hopeful. there’s also some of the best smut i’ve ever read lol. the sexual tension is CRAZY, too. the situation where two people in a relationship (or lack thereof) have different expectations for the future (or lack thereof) is entirely relatable. i’ve been on both sides of that and both sides suck, so this book really hit home. i felt really conflicted at times, because i wanted tate to understand that she deserves more, but knowing what miles has gone through made me sympathize with him a lot, as well. i really loved this book, and i think it’s worth a read if you’re in the mood for a good cry.

Wow! Ugly Love is more different, complex story than Colho’s other works! It’s more passionate, stimulating, angsty from the beginning! First time Tate and Miles meet each other: Miles suffers from nightmare and Tate tries to soothe him. They have no intention to become friends. But there’s a big conflict. Tate is new tenant who moves to Miles’ brother’s apartment. They have to see each other and the chemistry between them can blow up the entire neighborhood. They should do something about it. Miles is so private, close, keeping everything to himself. You may sense who suffer from big loss and heal from a big tragedy. Tate thinks a woman burned into. He can only offer sex to her and at the beginning this kind of no strings attach agreement works for Tate because her life is already complicated for intimate relationships. Maybe she can get him out of her system and she can move on. But what if she cannot? What if their sex turns into love making and they cannot stop thinking about each other. Tate is adamant to convince Miles talk about his past but what if Miles has no intention to move on his life ? What if he wants to live in the past to punish himself which means they don’t have a chance to create a brighter future together! Ugly Love is dirty! It’s intense! It’s tear jerker, heartbreaker! It shows dark side of romance! The characters are flawed, wounded and both of them deserve second chances! Overall: not my best but still one of my favorite Colho books I’ve never get bored to read again. Some of my favorite quotes:“Love isn't always pretty. Sometimes you spend all your time hoping it'll eventually be something different. Something better. Then, before you know it, you're back to square one, and you lost your heart somewhere along the way.”“I didn’t fall in love with you… I flew.”( 10 tear jerking points)“Ugly love becomes you. Consumes you. Makes you hate it all. Makes you realize that all the beautiful parts aren't even worth it. Without the beautiful, you'll never risk feeling the ugly. So you give it all up. You give it all up. You never want love again, no matter what kind it is, because no type of love will ever be worth living through the ugly love again.”“But the second she opened her eyes and looked at me, I knew. She was either going to be the death of me . . . or she was going to be the one who finally brought me back to life.”

Review was originally published on Through the Chapters|Blog*4.5 stars*What a ride it's been!A love story between two people, Miles and Tate, who weren’t ready to fall in love, or at least they thought so. They came to an agreement from the very beginning. But was an agreement enough to prevent them from feeling something more than the mutual attraction they had?I had a love-hate relationship with this one. This story, those characters, and their relationship were so conflicting. On the one hand, I hated Miles due to his behaviour towards Tate, even if I hadn’t the right to feel this way. He was pretty clear with his rules. “Don’t ask about my past,” he says firmly. “And never expect a future.” I hated Tate for being so weak with everything that included Miles. It felt like she had little sense of her own self-worth. He was insulting her and she was waiting for his text messages. He was using her and she was willing to give everything to him. She either didn’t have the word “No” in her dictionary, or she fell in love with him from the very first time she saw him. And when I say love I mean this kind of love that consumes you, destroys you, heals you, and makes you fly. I prefer to go with this version, seeing that I don’t want to believe that Hoover created a weak-willed feminine character without self-worth and pride. On the other hand, as I was learning more about Miles' past, I’ve become more lenient. It was heartbreaking to read about the tragic events of his past. Colleen managed to intrude into my heart and mind and made me forgive both Miles and Tate. It wasn’t the unfortunate event that made me overlook, understand and love them. It was the message that the author managed to bear. We are all aware of it and maybe we even use it when we’re trying to comfort the people we love.Life must go on, no matter what.Although this may be true, it is difficult when it comes to the real life. Sometimes, people have to forgive themselves for events they weren’t even responsible for. It is always difficult and intimidating to get rid of the burden that disturbs you from the within. Perhaps, people just prefer to feel this emotional pain, considering that they punish themselves. As a result, they get used to that. As times goes by, they just don’t want to step out of their “comfort zones”; they prefer to get stuck on the pain they got used to experience for a long time. It is the fear that prevents them to feel and to be happy. Not the fear to love but the fear to get hurt again. To go through a new pain that love can cause. My point is that Miles got used to the torture he was in all this years; it was something that he was living with for 6 years. And even if it was an agony it was something familiar, and thus he could deal with it.Conversely, to fall again in love presumed that there was a possibility to experience pain again, but a completely new one, unknown and unfamiliar. That was what he was afraid of. Pain. Not love. “It’s not that I don’t like you, Tate… I just don’t want to like you. I don’t want to like anyone . I don’t want to date anyone. I don’t want to love anyone.” But there’s an interesting question. Is it possible to experience love without pain?Coupled with the above, I’ve become more tolerant towards Tate. If she wasn’t a weak-willed person when it had to do with Miles, he wouldn’t be able to understand his inner world, and hence Tate would have lost the love of her life. With those in mind, some would say it was defined by their fate to behave in those patterns. Perhaps, it was an essential condition, to forget the reason and self-esteem, in order to understand the depth of their emotions and the consequences of the past events on their new personalities, and hence to accept love as a power that heals everyone and questions everything.

“I didn’t fall in love with you… I flew.” I am ruined.I would like to think that after more than half a dozen books read and loved, I could call myself a seasoned Colleen Hoover reader and thus be equipped for all her ‘mind trickery’, and yet nothing, nothing in this world could have prepared me for the emotional avalanche that is Ugly Love. This is a book like no other in this author’s impressive repertoire, a book that gets under your skin from the very first sentence, and then page after page, it just keeps stripping you of every semblance of control you might have thought you had over your own feelings. It’s a book that annihilates you from within, slowly breaks your heart into so many pieces you’ll need tweezers to pick them all up, and then it simply stuns you into silence with one of the most unexpected, soul-shattering book moments in history. Every element of this story is so brilliantly thought out, so cleverly executed, so skilfully assembled into one of the most perfect stories I have ever read. Colleen Hoover is on an emotional rampage this time around, and she will ruin us all in the best possible way. “Love isn’t always pretty… Sometimes you spend all your time hoping it’ll eventually be something different. Something better. Then, before you know it, you’re back to square one, and you lost your heart somewhere along the way.” The story is split into two parallel timelines, one in the present and one in the past, and it follows two distinct voices all throughout the book. They are each so vivid and persuasive in their impact on the reader, that it often becomes difficult to reconcile them in our minds and see how one can coexist with the other. In the present, our heroine is a young woman in her early twenties, a student nurse who has just arrived in a new city to pursue a postgraduate degree and find a job. Tate Collins has never put relationships before her professional aspirations, her career always coming first, and she remains determined not to let love distract her from her goals. But on her very first day there, as she is moving into her new home, she meets her neighbour Miles, a young pilot and a close friend of her brother’s, and from that moment onwards, her heart doesn’t stop doing summersaults every time they run into each other. But Miles is not interested in love, now or ever again, and while their attraction is sizzling and at times difficult to rein in, he remains clear on two points… “Don’t ask about my past. And never expect a future.” In the past, we meet an eighteen-year-old Miles Archer, at the very moment he meets his first love. Through brief but particularly attention-grabbing little snippets of that past, we get to witness firsthand the heartwarming experience of falling in love for the first time through the eyes of a young Miles and it’s the very innocence of it all, the untainted joy and excitement of those feelings, that stand in stark contrast with the events and the Miles we get to meet six years later. “It’s not that I don’t like you… I just don’t want to like you. I don’t want to like anyone. I don’t want to date anyone. I don’t want to love anyone.” While in the past we see our hero free-falling into love, carelessly and enthusiastically, in the present scenario we see him holding back every one of his emotions from the woman who each day reluctantly falls herself deeper and deeper in love with him. As emotions start bleeding through, blurring the lines of the friends-with-benefits arrangement they have agreed on, Miles and Tate’s relationship becomes more and more complicated as time goes by, bringing them each day one step closer to Tate’s inevitable heartbreak and disappointment. Unspoken questions keep piling up, unrequited feelings keep getting suppressed, and eventually all that is left between them is the ugly side of love. “Make me leave… You don’t need this… I just don’t know how to stop wanting you. Tell me to go, and I’ll go.” I will stop here and tell you nothing more about this story. This is a book that will keep surprising you, devastating you, leaving you breathless by simply never allowing you to relax or foresee what lies ahead, and I assure you that you will never see the next blow coming. They are all delivered with such precision, I felt like I was on the receiving end of a knife throwing act. It’s a story that shows the resilience of the human spirit, regardless of how terrifying the ghosts of one’s past may be, and the healing power of love. The sheer brilliance of this book also lies in the language used, in the quirky dialogues, in the unique monologues, in the word repetitions, even in the extraordinary visual arrangements of words aimed to imprint the meaning of those words into our souls and leave us shivering in their wake. Nothing is accidental and everything is just right. “I hope she remembers the momentshebecamemyeverything.” By the end of this book, my hands were hurting from being balled into fists for so long, my heart was aching and rejoicing at the same time from the countless emotions it had been exposed to, my body was hurting from not having moved an inch for so many hours at a stretch, and I had developed an unhealthy animosity towards italics in general. This is the sexiest, most heart-wrenching Colleen Hoover book to date—a book that shows us a brand new side of this author’s writing genius, and it is in my humble opinion, her best work thus far.I am so ruined… and I loved every single moment of it. “If I were capable of loving someone . . . it would be you.” [6 STARS OF ABSOLUTE BRILLIANCE]See this review on my blog! | Follow me on Facebook! | Follow me on Twitter!Amazon US: http://amzn.to/1r5pQ56Amazon UK: http://amzn.to/1fIXyJ8Amazon CA: http://amzn.to/RjNpY4Paperback: http://amzn.to/1jAJS5g
